What is IT Virtualisation?

IT virtualization in cloud computing allows us to virtualize your servers, storage, or other physical hardware or data centre resources, which can then, in turn, allow them to provide numerous services such as infrastructure, software, and platforms.

It uses software to create an abstraction layer over computer hardware that allows the hardware elements of a single computer—processors, memory, storage and more—to be divided into multiple virtual computers, commonly called virtual machines (VMs). Each virtual machine runs its operating system (OS) and behaves like an independent computer, even though it is running on just a portion of the actual underlying computer hardware.

Historically, businesses have run most of their user software on desktops/laptops with the software installed locally. Virtualization moves this responsibility from the end user desk to one central point. It allows for a lighter footprint but also ensures that software is deployed correctly and updated centrally on the most up-to-date equipment, always.
